If you’ve ever seen one of my beach family sessions, you’ll know I love keeping things natural, relaxed, and full of connection. There’s something magical about the coast — golden light, salty breeze, and wide open space. My style is all about capturing the laughter, the cuddles, and those quiet, in-between moments that tell your family’s story.
One question I’m often asked before a session is, “What should we wear?”The good news is, it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few simple tips, you can choose outfits that feel comfortable, look gorgeous in the soft coastal light, and complement the natural tones of the beach.
Keep It Soft and Natural
The beach gives us the most beautiful palette to work with — pale sand, gentle blues, and creamy light — so choose colours that blend naturally with the surroundings.Think:
Soft neutrals like cream, white, oatmeal, and tan
Muted tones such as dusty blue, sage green, or blush
Natural fabrics like linen, cotton, or gauze that catch the breeze beautifully
AVOID: Bright or bold colours can throw unwanted reflections, while softer tones keep the focus on your connection and emotion.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
It’s lovely when your outfits feel connected but not identical. Instead of everyone wearing the same colour, pick a few tones that complement each other and mix in different textures. For example:
Mum in a flowing linen dress in soft blue
Dad in beige chinos and a white or cream shirt
Kids in shades that tie it all together — perhaps pale green, soft denim, or blush
This approach feels effortless and timeless in photos.
Comfort Comes First
My sessions are relaxed and full of movement — walking, twirling, splashing, and cuddling. When you’re comfortable, you’ll naturally relax into the moment. Choose outfits that allow you to move freely, and don’t be afraid to go barefoot — sandy toes are part of the story!
Long dresses that flow, linen shirts that catch the light, and simple, breathable fabrics always photograph beautifully.
Add Subtle Texture
A little texture can make your images even richer. Think soft knits, lace, linen, or a woven blanket. These small details add warmth and depth without taking away from your family’s connection.
Accessories should feel natural and simple — a hat, a delicate necklace, or a light throw can be lovely touches if they feel like you.
A Few Little Details
Skip large logos, text, or busy patterns — they draw attention away from faces.
Check the weather before you come — the beach can cool off quickly, so bring a light layer just in case.
Lay your family’s outfits out together the night before — it helps you see how the tones and textures work as a whole.
Relax and Enjoy It
The best photos come when you’re not thinking about the camera at all — when you’re laughing, chasing waves, or just soaking in the moment together. Don’t worry about perfection; your family’s connection is what makes the photos beautiful.
Wear what feels good, be yourselves, and let me capture the magic of your family by the sea.
